There would seem to be a simple solution to the current debate over the laws about marriage in Scotland: let all weddings and civil partnerships be undertaken by the civil registrar - over a half of weddings and partnerships are already undertaken this way.
Couples can then seek to celebrate their match any way they wish, religious or not, and the government would be spared responsibility for determining whether representatives of over 40 sects, churches or religions are suitable for undertaking the public role of certifying weddings and partnerships.
