Move to end religious observance in Edinburgh schools

Edinburgh Secular Society (ESS) is supporting a petition by Veronica Wikman, parent of an Edinburgh schoolchild, who is proposing that Edinburgh City Council promote a poll of electors to discontinue religious observance in city schools - a procedure available under the Education (Scotland) Act of 1980.

Already within one week of the launch of the campaign ESS has been contacted by numerous parents across Scotland who are unhappy with the way in which religious worship is imposed on pupils in ostensibly 'non-denominational' state schools.

Edinburgh electors can sign the petition at the petitions section of the Edinburgh Council website
